Common types and working principles of ice making machines

An ice maker is a device used to make frozen block or granular ice. Common types of ice makers are direct evaporation ice makers, indirect evaporation ice makers, refrigerant ice makers and water curtain frozen ice makers. Here’s how these ice makers work.

Direct evaporation ice maker:

The direct evaporation ice maker is composed of a condenser, an evaporator and a compressor. The compressor compresses the refrigerant in the ice maker into a high temperature and pressure gas, which is then passed into the evaporator. Inside the evaporator, the water in the ice maker condenses into ice through heat transfer. The refrigerant absorbs the heat of the water during evaporation and then re-enters the condenser to release the heat. The ice maker is able to produce large chunks of ice quickly, but it uses a lot of power.


Indirect evaporation ice maker:

The indirect evaporative ice maker consists of two heat transfer systems, one is a primary heat transfer system (water), one is a secondary heat transfer system (refrigerant). The water in the ice machine is heat absorbed by the primary heat transfer system and thawed by the refrigerant in the secondary heat transfer system. The refrigerant circulation system of this ice maker can reduce the water tightness requirement and is suitable for some industrial ice making.


Refrigerant ice maker:

Refrigerant ice makers use evaporative refrigerant to make ice. It has good cooling effect and energy saving performance. The refrigerant ice maker uses a compressor to compress the refrigerant into a high-temperature and high-pressure gas, and then releases heat through a heat transfer device. The refrigerant evaporates in the evaporator, absorbing the heat of the water to make it freeze. The refrigerant is then cooled by the condenser and re-circulated into the compressor. This ice maker is suitable for domestic and commercial ice making.

Water curtain freezing ice machine:

Water curtain freezing ice machine is mainly composed of water curtain device, compressor and electrical control system. The water film sprayed through the water curtain device forms a freezing effect with the condenser fan in the refrigerator, so that the frozen sheet falls vertically in the water to form granular ice. This ice machine is small in size and fast in ice making, which is suitable for domestic and commercial ice making needs.

In summary, they work differently, but they can all implement the function of ice making. Ice making machine has a wide range of applications in domestic and industrial fields.
